Hercules engine on the OC3 has been up and running many times this past month; suddenly, would not turn over more than once or twice, never start; had the starter completely rebuilt last week. Reinstalled it this AM, same problem; jumped current past the starter switch, thot maybe it was bad, still no start; batt is brand new and fully charged. Is the problem electrical or I am missing something real simple? Will appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks PC

Scratch this plea; problem was a faulty "new" batt that was putting out less than 50% enough cranking amps to do the job; If a posting like this ever shows up again, tell poster to BEGIN with the battery; could have saved myself the cost of a starter rebuild if I had; ignorance is bliss, live and learn. Thanks for your followups and advice. This IS a helpful board. PC

Have tried every fix, advice, suggestion posted; no success; engine simply will not move when power put to the starter; I can turn engine over by hand so it isn't stuck. Looks like a dismal weekend and more snow than we want or need.
Thanks for the suggestion. PC

PC,
You might try (maybe already have) running starter on the bench to make sure it is free. Also, it is possible for a battery to have a hot surface charge and still be shorted internally. This can be detected with a load tester. Maybe you can borrow one or get someone to test it for you.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Pete

Problem was with faulty "new" battery'; getting less than 50

problem was the "new" battery; was getting less than 50

problem was "new" battery; it was delivering less than 50% of the cranking amps needed.

thanks for the suggestion. PC

becareful when hooking the battery cable to your starter on the OC-3...delco doesnt give much allowance for spin on the starter stud...if you spin the stud when putting on the cable you can break the tab holding the field winding, causing all kinds problems.

Thanks for the warn ing; finally got the problem licked this AM; test of that "new" batt showed it was putting out less than 50% of required cranking amps. Live and learn. Thanks
