I'm thinking about buying a HD5 dozer, can anyone tell me something about it, power, age, what work I can expect to do, what it can't do.

Also owner says that the steering clutch is bad and a replacement will cost around $200.

Any comment appreciated.

Walt

Walt, I sent you and E-mail about the HD-5. It was rather lenghty and may not have gotten through. Just leave a message here so I'll know if you recieved it. If not I can FAX it to you or send it by the old U.S. postal system. Happy Dozin',Phil

The HD 5's were good little machines. They were built from 1946 to 1955. To find the serial number, look on the right rear of the final drive housing just below the fuel tank. It should start with HD5B. After that will be numbers. If you give me the numbers, I should be able to tell you what year it was built. Those machines were powered with a GM 2-71 diesel engine of 142 cubic inches. The machines had 47.85 belt h.p. and 38.24 drawbar h.p.. They weighted in about 12,000 pounds without the blade. They could have a Baker or Garwood blade on them. They have a double reduction final drive system. Changing the steering clutch in those machines is not a very big job if it is indeed the steering clutch and not the final drive gears. I'll be happy to supply you with more info, just let me know.

I have a HD5G 19034 Can you tell me anything about this machine. I live in Canada. The clutches are stuck. I adjusted the linkage to put mor force on the fork to open the clutch but now the lever is loose again I belive the clutch has moved in and not returned . I have filled the 2 housings with diesel fuel and after 2 weeks there is still no releasing of the clutches.

I have recently bought a AC HD5, the information ACPhil posted to Walt was very interesting. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what year mine was made. The serial number is HD5B 13572.
