Chuck said it very well. They are mechanically very similar. The 1010 is not a converted tractor, it is a purpose built industrial crawler, the total 1010 ag crawler production was less than 400 units. Only thing else I could add to what Chuck said is that the 350 engine will be cheaper to overhaul and is widely regarded as a very good engine. The 1010 was not, especially the diesel. I should add that we have an early 1010 with a power 6-way, completely restored. Nice machine, but would still rather have a 350 for using.

Late model 1010 and early model 350 are very similar. The major changes were made in the final drive area. 1010 tend to be a little weak where the final drive mounts to the rear case. The reverser transmissions are the same but the coupling device used on the flywheels are different and seem to give the most problems on 350 diesel. If the machine makes a loud rattle and clunking noise when shutting off suspect that the coupler is worn. Many times by 4500 hrs the 350 diesel coupler is very noisy. Myself I own a 1010 and am happy with it. Either machine will perform well as long you don't overload them. If you expect to clear an acre of stumps you may be dissapointed.

One thing to remember is that the JD 1010 and 1020 were basically green tractors that JD painted yellow, put tracks on them and called them crawlers. The 350 was the first crawler JD built that was built as an industrial crawler and was not related to the 1010/1020 in crawler lineage other than the name JD. Another thing to think about is that a gas engine does not pack the ooomph that a diesel does.

Don't you mean 2010, not 1020? The 1020 was never offered in a crawler version. By that time the industrial division had the 350. There was a 2010C.

This may not help, but i once rented a JD 1010 gas from a friend. He had it all gone through, even the engine was rebuilt profesionaly. He was very proud of it. I worked it for a week cleaning out a willow patch, and as far as i'm concerned it was a POS! It was under powered, and took for ever to get anything done. He kept asking what i thought of it, but i never told him the truth!! Another friend owned a JD 350 diesel, and what a huge difference in these machines. I was looking for a nice JD 350 when i ran on to a very nice Case 450. I still have it, and it's been a very reliable work horse that's needed nothing but maintance. From what i can see, the Case 450's are a very under rated dozer. Robert
