Hi Bob. Thanks for the help locating the problem. To refresh - I have a 1986 D3B sn#27Y04543 that did not steer well when pushing down the left clutch pedal. You told me to check the roller bearing on the steering clutch control valve. It was badly worn (to see picture go to "Photo Ads" on this web site and look under "parts" select "view ads" and look at "For Sale D3B Roller Bearing". I ordered a new bearing as shown in the picture. I brought my old parts into the CAT Dealer and we determined that I have the later model "Control Valve" that was susposed to correct this problem but I guess the roller still wears out. In looking at the picture of the valve stem you can see how the end of the valve stem wore on one side. I noticed that with the new roller in place you can feel the end (fork) of the stem as you roll you finger over the roller bearing on the side that is not worn. Is that normal? Do I need to do anything else when I replace the roller bearing? Will I have to bleed the system? Do you think this will solve my problem? This is my first time working on a Dozer so please bear with me.
Thanks Steve

Hi Bob Still have not figured out if clutches are wet or dry. Can you explain in a little more detail where the 1/4 inch pipe plug is. I ordered a operators manual but it has not come in yet. I still am confused as to where certain parts are and some of the Dozer lingo.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve. Dozer 101,here goes.
The heavey square rear part of the tractor frame is called the Steering Clutch & Bevelgear Case.
The two hemispherical(well almost) cases bolted to each side, with the sprocket shafts coming out of them are the Final Drives. The final drives are filled with oil(30 or 50) through a pipe plug, half way up(sprocket shaft level). This plug has a 1/2" square hole and can be removed witha 1/2" drive power bar. If you can't move it and think something is going to break, heat the plug red hot, let it cool then it comes out freely. Check this oil, if you have to topup look for a leak around the sprocket shaft.
Back to the steering clutches, look for a 1/4" pipe plug with a 1/4" hex hole in it. There should be one on each side of the steering clutch case faceing outward, near the final drive fill plugs I just mentioned. If you can't find them you have dry clutches. If you do, take them out, oil should seep out, if not fish in with a wire and see if the oil is near the plug level, if so okay. If not look for a large plug 1,1/2" wrench size on top of each steering clutch. Before you put any oil in pull the plugs out of the bottom of the clutches and make sure they have had oil in them. The man that said they were wet may have seen someone working on another machine they had, they likely had more than one of them.
Hope this helps untill you get your book.
You'v done well for me sending you up into the mountians with a little knowledge and a fist full of wrenches.Good day Eh!Bob
