440 crawler won't run

I bought a JD 440 crawler (not running) at a recent action. everything is there and it has been all cleaned up and painted. When I first tried to start it I could only get it to fire a few times and it would die. Finally, I checked the compression, and found that I only had 70-80 psi. I pulled the head and discovered that it had brand new over sized pistons. The intake valves where new , but the exaust valves where nearly gone, so I had a new seat and valves put in the head (one seat had already been replaced, and the other seat had a crack in it). I put every thing back together, and I rebuilt the carb, and I still can't start the thing. When I checked the compression again, I only got 80 psi. I am at a loss. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the rings are stuck. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help.

Hi Curt,

Don't be so fixed on the 80 psi compression. First of all the compression ration is only 6.4:1 not a lot here. An All Fuel Engine is 4:1. Second the engine has been sitting for awhile. If you have ever rebuilt an engine until the rings set in the compression is lower than you would expect. An engine that has sat and not been stored right is subject to some oxidazation.

My Model 40 uses the same engine and it starts in 2 maybe 3 turns of the starter. Take the carb apart and if you find rust then dismantle it all the way. Sand blast out the bad stuff and rebuild it. Any carb that has sat for years gets gummy and it doesn't take much to plug a small metering hole in a jet. You are right about the flapper and spring, the intent here is to place as much vacume on the intake manifold as possible. After all the fuel must be drawn up 6" into the head. Once the engine fires and speeds up the flapper will open and allow more air into the engine to stop it from choking it's self out on fuel.

curt, should start and run on 80 lb. check and see if the valves are adjusted and are opening and closing when they should, check the timing,check the plugs, points and coil and see if you are getting a good blue spark at the plugs when it should, is it getting fuel ?
also check and make sure you are not getting a air leak around the carb. gaskets and intake manifold, the intake manfolds are bad to rust holes in them and sometime it is hard to find the hole, be really careful on the timing and the air leaks, i have broken three starter nose cones because of the engine kicking back and they are real expencive. if you are getting fuel ,spark and valve shut at the correct time it should start

Good news, got the dozer runing this afternoon. I set the timing according to the manaul by setting the engine at the spark mark, and turning the dist. until the points started to open. This seems to have been quit a bit retarded. By advancing the spark I was able to start the engine and keep it going. I haven't put a load on in yet, so I am still concerned about the compression. I wonder if the low compresion is the reason it needs to be advanced to run? Also, I had to nearly choke the carb completely off with my hand to get it to start. When I rebuilt the carb. I noticed that the choke plate had a fairly large oblong hole on one side. A metal flapper is attached to the other side of the choke plate. according to the manual, there is suppose to be a spring that holds the flap over the hole. My spring is missing, so the flapper is just laying in the throat of the carb. I'm thinking that I might not be getting enough gas to start because of this. What do you think?

Try putting a little oil in every cylinder and do the compression check again. That should boost the compression temporarily if the rings are stuck. If that doesn't change anything the valve adjustment may be too tight.
