I've got about ten acres I'd like to clear myself as time permits. And yeah, I'll admit having been a tractor guy I've always wanted to get a crawler to work on/with. Working on it would be half the fun. Question is which would be the better machine for what I want to do- Stumps, push rocks and dirt around, land clearing, -a loader or a dozer? Any particular size machine suggested?

hi george,

I was thinking last night about crawler loaders, and remember seeing this post and had an idea. You can have the best off both worlds by buying a crawler loader, some thing like a case, jd, 350,450 ect.

You have your loader for all the loading, hauling jobs. find your self a out side of track C frame and blade off of an old dead dozer, you can mount this on the craweler loader, the same way you'd mount it to the dozer. To lift the blade up and down use the loader. Do this by making two bars to attach from blade frame to loader frame. lift the loader you lift the blade.

Ive seen it done alot and works well, just remember to take off the bucket and don't lift the loader to high or your blade will end up in the rad.

The best of both worlds.

In my opinion both would be good for what you want to do, the only advantage to a crawler loader would be that you can carry material or load a dump trailer and you could add forks to it for moving logs ect. instead of dragging them through the dirt

A tracked loader with a clamshell bucket is my recommendation. I have a Case 310G tracked loader that I have cleared a lot of land with. I don't have a clamshell but my bucket can reach a lot farther up on a tree than a dozer blade can. Also, the reach of the bucket helps shaking the dirt off the roots and stacking the brush. And, if the tree is too big to push. I just dig the roots up then push it over. A Case 450 would probably be the ideal size for personal use. Unless you've got come humongus rocks.
