Genarators are easy. We are assuming the armature is good. Napa has brushes for most generators. Usually 3 to 5 bucks. Check the bearings, if they're lose, worn, or in anyway bad replace them. Your local bearing house will have them , less than 20 bucks probably. If they're tight, turn smooth and reasonably clean don't be afraid to continue using them.
Next, clean the copper bars well, where the brushes run . They should be fairly smooth and have at least some depth in the insulation between bars. By the book, you should have this section turned and recut, but I have rerun many generators many times with a good cleaning.
Finally, clean the generator well, check the wires, make sure evrything is Ok and you should be good to go.
