We are looking at an older D-4 to use for projects around the farm, some land clearing, and logging. It is an older model I think around 1945. It has a hydraulic dozer blade mounted on it. It is supposed to be in excellent condition with little use, the original cutting edge, and no welds on it. How much does this maching weigh? What about parts availability? What might ballpark price be? Anything else I should know about the older D-4's before I buy one? Thanks a lot for your advice.

D4 was an excellent Cat. I have a D45T. Hydraulic blade is a deffinant plus. Make sure the pump is on the front. The D4 does NOT have a live PTO.
They run from 5 to 800 dollers in very rough not running condition to 3500 for working condition and up for cherry or new condition. There big advantage is alot of workable power in a small package. I would guess yours to wiegh around 12000 lbs. IF you put 1000 lbs on a half ton pickup or 1500 on a 3/4 ton your going to need a truck. If you Drive a Ford and arnt afraid to work it, a 3/4 ton + a good trailer with good brakes + alittle common sence, will pull your D4 anywhere you want to go.
