I found out that the fellow I bought my 500C from has been using regular Hydraulic oil instead of universal Hydraulic/Trans oil in the Tranny. Would this cause any damage? I have noticed that on hills it lacks power. Should I replace the fluid right away? Thanks for your help.

Water in the tranny is one that got me. I could barely crawl when empty. The 3 speed tranny stick boot was rotted out, letting rain into the tranny via the stick. I replaced it with an OEM boot from an IH dealers stock and that rotted out within one year. I then used a shifter boot from a 1981 ford escort parts car, that one is still there 5 years later. The ford boots rubber is better than the OEM rubber, you can feel the difference.

As for the water thing, let the machine sit overnight, then loosen the tranny drain plug about 4 revolutions, and see if water drips out. If so, try holding the plug and turning it a little more, to get more flow. I got about 2 gallons from mine, then started getting hytran. I closed the drain plug, replenished the fluid level, and zoom! Like new. Tranny ran 20 degrees cooler as well.

It would be a good idea Rick. I am assumeing here that the reverser has clutch packs and not gears to shift. If there is no clutch slippage you are fine, modern eng oil can be deadly to clutch packs though, too slipery. How is it bogging down on hills, is the engine loading down or the machine just slowing and the eng speed staying up? If the engine is loading down then the clutches are okay. I'm no IH expert, just my thoughts.

Bob, It does have clutch packs instead of gears. The engine revs stayup, the tractor just slows down to a crawl. Will replacing the fluid and fliters restore any power, or am I looking at replacing the clutch packs/discs? The former owner used the tractor on the flats and may not have noticed it too much.

Rick, have you used a machine with a torque convertor before? They will slow down under heavy load, it's called torque stall RPM, when the machine stops moving and you measure the engine RPM. When the machine comes to a crawl the engine should be working hard, you can hear it. The clutches usually slip when you first engage them, not after you get moving, but not always. Try to get a tach so you can see the eng speed, then if the tractor slows and the RPM's do not rise the clutch is not slipping, if the torque temp stays down the torque is likely good to. Change the oil and if you have a filter cut it open and look for metal in it, before you tear things apart.
