I recently purchased a JD 440 gas crawler. I would like to check the timing but haven't gotten a manual yet. A friend has a manual for a JD 40. I was told the engines are the same. Can someone tell me if I can use the specs. and procedure for a 40? Thanks.

Russ,
The procedure is the same. The advance mark is on the flywheel. Run at high idle, and set it so the word "spark" shows in the timing window.

Thanks for the information. I guessed the timing was off when I bought the machine. It wasn't running smoothly and lost power when I tried using it. I moved the timing slightly and it made a tremendous difference. I'm looking forward to timing it correctly and putting it to use. The dozer appears to be in great shape but it has been sitting for over a year. The only problem I still need to fix is the throw-out bearing is not releasing completely. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate your advice. I haven't checked the fluids in the transmission or rear end yet. Thanks again.

Russ,
Sounds like you need more freeplay in the clutch. The adjuster is on the left hand side of the bell housing. Use a 3/4" and I think a 7/16" to adjust. The 3/4" nut locks it, and the small stud sticking out adjusts it.

Thanks for your help. The dozer wasn't running smoothly and would lose power under a slight load. I timed it by ear and the change was tremendous. I'm looking forward to timing it accurately and actually putting the machine to use. It's been sitting for over a year and the throw-out bearing isn't releasing. I need to work on that but the rest of the machine appears to be in great shape. Thanks again.
