I am considering purchasing a Case 310 crawler with a lot of hours - but in running condition. This is the narrowist crawler tractor that I have found. I intend to use it in a close ploanted vineyard on a steep slope. I anticipate doing a lot of work on this tractor - are parts available?
Is it worth fixing up and how much should one pay for a fixer-upper? Where can I find a history of this kind of tractor?

Don,

I've bought five 310's in the last 8 months, all less than $750. The one for $750 ran, but needed engine and undercarriage rebuilt.

Working crawlers can be found for $2K and up. Good condition for around $3500, and a fresh rebuild for $5 - $6K.

The sprockets and axles are what fails most on these crawlers. These parts are available new and used at about $250 for each item.

I'm finishing one now that has a loader.

It has a completely rebuilt engine, with new pistons, sleeves, intake valves, ground crank, hot tanked and line bored block, new clutch disk, refaced pressure plate and flywheel. New electrical including alternator, wires, lights, switches etc. Rebuilt final drive with new bearings and sprocket on one side. Undercarriage has been freshened.

Any worn part was replaced as needed.

All new fluids, including antifreeze, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and gear lube.

All new paint with paint on all surfaces before being assembled. It was pressure washed and wire wheeled on the undercarriages, frame and sheetmetal.

I have it running now and need to assemble a few more parts. It will be available in about two weeks.

I have been laid off from work and it was my project tractor. I need to sell it because my tractor money account is drained. Now I'm back to work and need to get on with normal plans.

Don, Case still has some parts for the 310s but depending on what you need you may run into trouble. I've had some luck finding decent used parts for mine, but very time consuming. If you're planning on running on steep slope make sure track and u/c are in good shape, you don't want to loose a track. I've put them back on in vineyard rows-no fun. Value of 310s varies with model and condition I've seen as high as 5k but usually 2-3k or less. You might want to search this forum to learn more about 310 crawlers. Good luck. John
