I am interested in finding out about an electric start kit for an older model D7 catterpillar. Pony motor is shot and I am told it is more practical to replace than to rebuild. Any advice is welcome.

Terry you can do it, but I would recomend that you change the precombustion chambers to ones that will take glow plugs. The chambers have different thickness gaskets (soft metal rings) so you can position the glow plugs right. I have heard that you can get a starter with a coarse pinion that will run on the ring gear you have, but personally I would pull the clutch or convertor, and get the flywheel out and use the standard ring gear. You may need a new ring gear at this time any way. Then you can get a good used starter that will work. Just make sure that the gear and pinion match.Use a new HEAT/START switch too so the glow plugs work when cranking.

Just my $.02 worth. Bob's post is ok, but requires lots of dollars. From his post I would say he's never put one on. You can buy one that will fit your ring gear with no problem. What else you do after that is what adds up. How much you us it, in what times of the year & so on. What is your s/n?? Again, Bob's post is rite on, but big bucks. HT

Bob, I just made a statement based on what I read, no more. Nothing personal. This is one thing about these BB's is you can't tell what someone is thinking or saying sometimes by words. HT

None taken Half track,:<) We used to do a lot of the change overs 25/30 yrs ago when I started in heavy equipment, usually at the time of eng rebuilds. I just like to put all the cards on the table, right up front, and then no suprised. You should have read the reply I gave a guy with a collapsed throw out bearing on an old D4 steering clutch, I think he went into shock, been 2 weeks and he still hasn't come back.:<)I've got the idea that I have to fix it once and when be able to forget about it, the machines end up far away from me.
You are a contractor aren't you?
This is long I should have emailed you .Bob
