Hi Clarence,

Well the engine is running is a good sign, but before we start a tear down which looks probable. Does the crawler have a PTO and is it turning. Some of the 440's had a reverser on the drive shaft, check for engagement. Remove the 4 bolt steering clutch covers and engave the drive are the drums turning. There is the possiblity that the clutch is disengaged at the transmission, did the pedal come back up and is there tension on the pedal. Take the cover of off the transmission at the gear shift see if anything is turning.

I have torn my 40 down and removed the transmission all because when I over hauled it I put the 1st and 4th gear in backwards on the shaft. 2 days of labour to fix that one.

Hope this helps.

TonyK.

When I was running it only one track was pulling good the other track moved real slow. Do you think it is the drive clutches? Are they hard to install? What I call a highlift is when the Bucket raises high enough to load a truck.

Clarence,
Sounds like steering clutches if it varies from side to side. They are not terribly hard to put in, but it is not fun either. You will have to split the tracks, and remove the finals to do it. I have replacement parts if you need them.
One other thing to check, is there oil in the clutch housings? Often times the pinion shaft seal goes out, and them gear lube migrates up the the clutch shafts and gets into the clutches causing them to slip.

I checked into Clutches and tracks this is what it looks like I need so far. I have $3800.00 I paid for the crawler a year ago. Now it is going to cost about $5000.00 to get it in good operating condition. I don't know if it is worth it. What do you think?

Clarence,
That is a hard question to answer. It really depends on the person that owns it and what they want it for. You will most likely have more in it than it is worth, but if you have no intentions of selling it, so what.
If you are referring only to tracks and steering clutches for $5000, that is way too high, we should be able to cut that substantially somehow. E-mail me directly or through my website, and we can maybe figure out a cheaper way to get you going.

What does it do? Does it kill the engin? I have a 420 that stoped moveing but it had a bad bearing in the transmission, and it caused 2 gears to get caught. Let me know I have been working on it a lot lately I know some.
