I bought a 1950 D-8. It has a nice cable dozer. What are the pros and cons regarding cable versus hyd? I got the age from Kelly on this site. I'm going to do some dike work along the river by my farm to keep it off my field, along with other misc. jobs. I do a lot of fixing, but haven't been around a cat. I think it will be alot of fun. Undercarriage is good and it has good power. I know this is vague, but when I prep(it needs some tinkering)it for working, does anything jump out at you that I should definately check or adjust? Any particular weaknesses to watch for? I did get a repair manual with it. Thanks!!

I've run D8 cable dozer, they work pretty good, just remember you can't push down on the blade, not to good if your trying to dig a hole. I used it to clear land and pile brush. Have fun, I love them old cats. Drill

Steve, the cable is good, there was a lot of resistance to hyd controls when they first came out, operators thought they were too slow. It took a lot of work to get them to match the speed of cable. The only down side is you can't lift your machine with cable, if you need to sometime.
Undercarrage and final drives are the biggest expence on those old dozers, that's were the power meets the dirt. Keep an eye on the final drive oil level and colour(creamy=water in the oil)and sprocket seals. Watch out for loose wire and old fence material,(can wind up around sprockets and ruin seals) check the sprocket hub bearings for adj. by prying on the sprocket with a crowbar,(should be tight). If you change any oil look at it for any metal or chips of teeth in it.
