D6 won't back up!

Our cat D6c (ser # 10K396) has decided to stop backing up. It started making a rumbling/howling sound in reverse, however would still run fine forward. Then it started making noises in both directions, and now has completely lost reverse (just makes clunking noise). Does this sound like a transmission problem only, or are the final drives involved? We've located a rebuilt transmission for $5000 with a 1 year warranty, and I have the experience to do the swap, I just want to be sure I'm replacing the right thing. To have the local cat dealer do a trans rebuild with with disassembly and assembly will be over $10,000. Any thoughts on the situation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, - Jeff

Jeff pull the magnetic screen and filter out, it will tell you right away. Sounds like trans trouble to me. You can run a long time with bevel gear bearings worn, just can't steer very good.
Take the pto cover off and look at the bevel gear and pinion, look for radial motion in the pinion,(bad bearing), end float is normal on power shift pinions. Comon back with what you find.

Bob, I pulled the P.T.O. cover off to check the pinion bearing as you said, and since there is not much of a bearing left to check I'd say I found the problem. All that is left are the races. I'll be pulling the transmission out within the next few days, and I was wondering if there was anything tricky about doing this. I'm not a professional diesel mechaninc, but I've got a good mechanical sense. I've had the torque converter out of this machine (and put it back together), so if pulling the trans is not much harder than that I think I'll be O.K. My next question is... Is the pinion a separate assembly that attaches to the back of the trans, or will the whole trans have to be rebuilt or replaced? I have a parts manual, but not the service manual - and its hard to tell by the pictures. I guess its a matter of where did the bearing parts go? I really appreciate your help - I've had great luck on posting boards with some of my other mechanical hobbies (Jeeps & snowmobiles), however on those boards I'm used to answering more questions than I ask. Thanks a lot for helping me with the stuff I'm not to sure about. At the rate this machine breaks, I'll be a pro before I know it! - Jeff

Jeff take the trans out and into a shop where you can work clean and dry. You need to take it apart in big pieces and repair the transfer gear section only. Take the address from this post and email, I'v tried twice and lost two long replys while editing.
