I知 looking to get a used backhoe. I知 a bit torn between what brand to get. My budget is in the $9K to $10K range. Searching locally there are lots of 580Bs and a few 580Cs. But there are also a few Ford 555 models that are a lot newer in my range. Does anyone have experience with both backhoes and has a preference? Is either one built better than the other? Are 580 parts easier to find than the Ford parts?

Thanks for any info!

I have a Ford 655C and have 7800 hours on the unit. It is a very strong and fast hoe and if you spend the money on proper maint, it might be the best bet in the long run if you want to keep it long term. Short term, Case / Cat for resale. As for JCB you might want to check out your local scrap yard.

You should at least consider a 2 stick CAT backhoe. If your new, the 2 stick system is much easier to master than the 3 sticks of the Case and Ford...

My 2 cents..

I've seen a few CATs in the farmers paper and none of them were any where near my price range. Are there older Cat TLBs below $10K? I'd love to get a CAT but even on machinerytrader.com the cheapest Cat (416) was $13K.

i am a retired operating engineer, and as far as i am concerned there is no comparison.case is the best small hoe made, and for sure the toughest.they just wont quit.

I have been an equipment operator for 10 years and i have to agree with Bod that ford and case have no comparison. If you want junk then but the ford if you want a real machine then go with the case even better a John Deere that is a couple of years old. I have run Ford,Cat,Case,John Deere,JCB and if i had to choose one it would be a Case or a Deere.

Both are good hoes but if it were my money I would opt for the Case it might not be as strong or fast as the Ford but longevity counts alot for me.

you should be able to get a sweet machine for that kind of money if you are patient. i have had a ford and a case 480c riht now. even though the case is older i can still get just about any part i need, my dealer almost always stocks it. they are easy to work on. they even had the plastic knob for the shifter!! if you get a case do not get anything older then a C because you have to split the tractor to do a clutch. the C and newer you can ust pull the tranny, engine etc. i am told the D and newer are the best cause you get an even better engine , its a cummins.
