Advice on D6 8U

Need some advice from more experienced Caterpillar owners: I recently purchased my first crawler under less than ideal circumstances. I had borrowed a D6 from an acquaintance for a fairly large project -- then my acquaintance got nervous and either wanted me to buy the machine or he'd pull it out with the project half done. Anyway, I bought it for $5000 and now all of a sudden am having starting engine trouble. Near as I can tell, I am lacking much compression in the starting engine. Had carb. rebuilt, put new rotor in the distributor, new spark plug wires (yes, the solid ones) etc. Can't find the points, or a new cap, but I seem to have good spark now. The starting engine will start and run smoothly, but with little power. The hotter the engine gets, the less power -- so badly that it will quit altogether, forget spinning the Diesel past a compression. Other times, it goes okay for ten minutes or so. My question boils down to: What can I do short of R&I the starting engine and rebuilding it to restore enough power to reliably start the Diesel? I'm just looking for a year's use or so, so it doesn't have to be perfect. If a starting engine rebuild is inevitable, any advice on how to proceed (or how NOT to proceed) ? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Bob & Fred. I'll check the fuel line, but last I looked it ran freely. In fact, as the starting engine loses power, it helps to lean the main jet out a bit. Also, the right hand side cylinder (away from the controls) loads up with liquid badly (about a half ounce out of the drain cock after ten minutes or so) while the left side runs as I would expect. I had heard of the crankcase oil thinning for some fuel-related reason (???) any connection here?

What do you think this liquid is Pete? Anti freeze, oil, oil and fuel. Does the cyl get anything in it when the engine is left and not run?

The liquid seems to be mostly gasoline, possibly with oil in it. It smells of gasoline, but has a black color and is roughly the viscosity of gasoline. I don't think anything accumulates when the engine is stopped -- it's been parked for about a week now, so I'll check when I get home and get back to you. Thanks.

If you have not already done so, try changing the oil. Sometimes it gets diluted with gas and makes it not run well.

I wonder if the carb is flooding the engine Pete. Try running without any air cleaner or anything else on the carb and see if extra fuel is going into the eng( float too high).

I checked both drain cocks last afternoon and nothing of substance came out. A few drops of that black gasoline/oil mix from the right cylinder is all.

I'll try removing the air cleaner as you suggest, but i'm confused on how one cylinder can have such a drastically different carbeuretion from the other given that they both intake from the same intake manifold, and neither is further from the carb. than the other. Is it possible that liquid gasoline is running into the intake manifold and for some reason the right cylinder happens to be a little downhill, so it just flows right in?

Pete it doesn't make sence but I would check it anyway and change the oil as Tom says. Could help you more if I was there at the machine.

Pete this is a shot in the dark but if the engine started the diesel before and still runs maybe the valve adj, should be checked. I'll look something up for you, and get back in a day or two. At worst maybe a valve job on it would be the cheapest way to go. I know you don't have a lot to do with it but if you want to sell it and it starts good you will get your money back big time compared to haveing to pull start it for someone.
