I know this has probably been gone over many times on here but, if so, I've missed it. I'm getting ready to fire up my T6 and I'm wonderng what your opinions are about using sythetic dual viscosity oil in it. I love it in my truck but is it ok in this old engine? Will the detergents harm the seals? The engine is in very good shape. I didn't rebuild the enine but it seems as though someone has.

Thanks, Jeff

People are ignoring this post like the plague... for fear of starting another oil war I guess. If the engine has new seals and gaskets I would break the engine in on a mineral based oil like Rotella or Delo for 50-100 hours before switching to synthetic. If the engine has not been rebuilt I would not use synthetic at all in the engine.

Dr. Evil, Thanks for the reply. What is your reason for saying not to use the synthetic if the engine is not rebuilt? Because it will harm the seals?

Thanks, Jeff

The make-up of mineral oil makes the seals & gaskets swell to make-up for any wear... synthetics don't cause that swelling and lots of used engines start leaking oil if they have a lot of hours on the seals and gaskets and are switched from mineral oil to synthetics.
