Here's one for the books. I discovered my 4WD not working when I got the tractor stuck in mud. After dragging it out with my bulldozer I investigated.

What happened was the linkages lead down to the rear of the transfer case which ends at 2 anchor points on the rear of the transfer case. These ears have completely snapped off. Now when you lift the lever in the cab there is now no pivot point and the rod/yoke which engages/disengages 4WD cannot be moved.

The 64million dollar question is how can this be fixed?? It looks like this case is cast iron. Spoke to some welders and they said be prepared to spend lots of money if cast!!! Are there any other alternatives??? Currently, I have pushed the rod in so I have 4WD all the time. This helps for now, but looking for a long term fix.

Again, all HELP is appreciated.

Tom

Tom,
This just a wild a-- guess but i would think the pins that broke are pressed into the cast. If so drill and tap and put in bolts. If cast maybe you can drill the cast and put bolts or studs in. Let us know what you end up doing

Sonny: I wish I could tap out. What broke off looked like 2 ears molded into the casing. When these broke the top half or better broke and of course fell off so don't have anything left to drill.

I think I am going to have to "rig" some other kind of pivot point. Hopefully I can find some clear area underneath to bolt this "contraption" to. Will let you know what I come up with. THANKS for the feedback!!

Tom is the pivot point neat any place that the trans case separates. If there is any heavy structural bolts near, make an angle bracket that these bolts can go through, use bolts the thickness of bracket longer than are in there now and the same grade( dashes on the head or number on the head if metric). Then mount the pivot to that bracket. Just a thought.Bob

Tom. Do you think the case is thick enough to drill the case itself and tap that. I have not seen the e series that you are working with. Have you talked to a good old case mech that maybe has done field repair? Sure hope you can fix it easy.

Sonny/Bob;

I think Bob's suggestion is the first thing I'm going to try. Sonny, drilling into the case kind of scares me. Maybe as a fall back position. It's been raining in CT for the last 3 days so can't do any work till maybe this weekend.

I have to see if there are any structural bolts etc. If there are I could make my a home made anchor. I did discover that the possible reason this broke was the previous owner snapped the threaded rod onto which the yoke screws on. Someone then welded this rod back on and when they did it they put it on crooked. It was tipped upward. I suppose after years of stress because of the "bent" yoke stressed these anchor point and well there you have it.

Thanks to all for your responses. Will keep you guys updated once I get a dry day to do more investigating.

Thanks
Tom
