Hello all, I've been looking at a Case 680E that is for sale. It has 49XX hours and seems to be taken care of for the most part. I was wondering what anyone could tell me about these machines. What engine is it? Is it pretty reiable? It was built for The National Guard and has a few interesting mods. It has Different Cab stairs and the loader has been converted to 2 lever control. I guess they did it so GI JOE could jump out the right side door (no lever in the way). Anyway, how hard would it be to convert it back to single control? Any help would be appreicated.

I'm looking at a CASE 680E SN 9122174, the seller says it is a 1986, another person told me they quit making the machines in the late 70s, how can I confirm the age of the machine?

Hi Scott,
The engine is a 336BD. It had a center drive oil pump/balancer, which many people eliminate and go to a front drive oil pump. We didn't sell a bunch of 680s, but it seems like we had better luck with the low hp, small crank engines (like the 680E) than with the large crank hi hp 336BDT.
I think the dual lever loader control is actually the only control option available. The 680 was made at the Terre Haute plant, with the W series wheel loaders, and they used dual controls too. (Maybe because the larger spools take more force to actuate??? I don't know, just a guess there). The valve is completely different, but I imagine you could study a 580 and make something, if you want to bad enough. Or, who knows, you might just get used to it... Good luck

I might just get used to it... our other tractor is 2 lever control so its no big deal. Thanks for the quick response. I wonder about the general specs of the machine. Weight, hp(how many cyl is it?), Front bucket cap., Dig depth, etc. It seems to be a fairly burly tractor for its time.

Hi Scott,
I don't have all of my books here, but I think its got a 1.25 yd loader bkt, 16' hoe, and weighs around 15000. (Compare this to the more popular 580C with 14' hoe, 11,500 lbs.)
The 336 engine is a 4 cyl version of Case's 504 cyl engine 4.625" x 5" stroke, I think the 680E is somewhere around 70hp. It is a burly tractor, but not as handy as the 580s due to its larger size.

Thanks for your help, Those specs are jiving with what it looked like. The extra size may actually be a help for the kind of work I have to do. Doesn't hurt that the bigger rigs are usually cheaper because of lack of demand. The olive drab paint job is kinda neat. LOL

Does anyone know where I could find a 3ft bucket for this machine? Not a must, but it would be nice to have two buckets.

I have seen many back-hoe buckets for sale on Ebay. shipping or finding it close is the challenge. I too am looking at a 680 as it is reasonably priced.
