This is an idiot question of the highest order, but if I turned the bucket backwards on a TLB, and welded up a hydraulic gate powered by the remote valve, could it act like the old-time power shovels for loading? Reason is to save tearing up clutches and tires in a 70 foot gravel bank and loading into a stationary gravel harp. All constructive comments welcome. Tom

My constructive comment would be that YOU are an absolute MORON. What kind of idea is that? Are you trying to ruin a good backhoe? People like you have no business being around machines. JC

might be a silly question, but why not use the hoe as is to dig the gravel by starting high up and pulling down against gravel face.when you get a pile built up turn around & scoop up loose rock with reg bucket...would save a bunch of work just slower...you are talking about a backhoe???.....sounds like you really need a trackloader...

power would be the problem.the boom is designed to crowd with maximum push from the cylinder ,so the ram would be pulling to dig.But if you've got the time to do the job it'll probably work.if you decide to set it up post a picture of the backward hoe.

Hi Tom,
If I understand you right, you're wanting to use the backhoe as a shovel? And you would load the bucket by turning it backwards and pushing the dipper stick toward the bank while lifting with the boom?
The first two things that come to mind are that pushing the dipper stick out is usually a very low force operation, and you might break something, since it wasn't designed to work against large loads in that direction. The other thing is that most hoes are set up with the large side of the piston getting the pressure to apply the most force. In other words, the cylinder extends to bring the dipper in. When the cyl retracts to push the dipperstick out, the annular or rod end of the cylinder is weaker, since the pressure oil is applied to the smaller piston area (Pressure lbf/in^2 x Area in^2 = Force lbf).
