My JD 1010C loader (gas)is real handy and works well, except that after loading a couple dump trucks, it overheats. Gauge is new. Radiator flushed and checked out at a radiator shop last month. Thermostat is new and hoses. Water pump removed and checked out fine by me and JD dealer. Tried 2 different radiator caps. No water in oil and I dont see any bubbles in water. Even when it reads in the red,,,,,I CAN take the radiator cap off without it bubbling over??? I dont get it. Dealer thinks maybe cracked head. It runs fine on a cool morning.. I would like to run it more than 15 minutes at a time. Anyone got any ideas??? I'm stumped. Oh,,,,I also played with the timing. Cant time with a light, since loader frame in the way. I timed it several times by ear. Any help appreciated....Greg

Am I missing something?
How can it be overheating and the radiator not boil over?
I have a JD450 that seems to run in the red, but never seems to be overheated. The previous owner said it always has run in the red section of the temperature gauge. I just assumed that the gauge or sending unit was off. maybe I should check the actual water temperature myself.

Get a kitchen cooking thermometer and put in radiator neck and check temp. This will tell you what you need to know about actual temp and gage operation. Keith G.

Try removing the thermostat and see if that helps. You say it doesn't bubble over but is the water/coolant at real high temp. Could your gauge be up against hot area like manifold? Or is gauge bulb that goes in block to long and hitting cylinder wall. Don't understand why it want build pressure if all is new. is fan blade turning right direction. Good luck

Greg a cracked head should cause the rad to pressurize, you say it is not. Timing can cause overheating, try to get this right some how and see if it is better. When you get it too hot and shut down does it diesel( run on after the ignition is shut off)?

No, it doesnt diesel when shut off. And it definitly doesnt build up pressure in cooling system. I can take the cap off even when the "new" gauge is in the "red". It just doesnt seem that hot to me. Maybe bad gauge but I'm gonna keep checking. I will spend more time on the timing. There must be a way to time it with the loader frame there, maybe mirror. Thanks for your advice. By the way, when I went to adjust the timing by ear,,,,the distributor nuts were loose. It does start better now that I turned it a few degrees. I'll put more attention here. Greg

Greg, you can time it with the engine off. take off dist cap turn engine over until you get to #1 comp coming up to tdc, stop at the the desired timing deg. Put a piece of cigaret paper between the points, turn the dist. untill the paper comes free and lock it up there. Form what you say I doubt you realy have a problem, I suspect the gauge too. Do you know anyone who has an infared temp gun? I have one and can measure top & bottom tank temp by pointing at the tanks. You should have 180/190 deg/F top and 10/20 deg temp drop at the bottom. Another thing you can do to test the gauge is to put the temp bulb of a new gauge into the top of the rad and compare it to the gauge on the dash.

How about pulling out the guage and sender, getting a 12V battery (assuming the crawler isn't 6V)and boiling a pot of water. Hook the sender/guage/battery up and drop the sender in the water. Check how it reads, and use a regular thermometer to verify the water temp. Should give you an idea of what you're looking at. Also, maybe the threads on the sender are corroded and need to be cleaned.
