450C JD Crawler will not backup after it gets hot does fine when cold. Hesitates in higher gears going foward after it gets hot. I do not know where to check the fliuds in the trans. Not sure if there is anyway to make adjustments, etc.

Hey Mike, I hate to tell you but you are probably going to be looking at big money to fix! I just rebuilt the trans in a 450C that was doing the same thing that yours is doing. It cost my customer over $8000 in parts and most of that was used stuff. This trans has metal sealing rings on a shaft at the rear of the clutch pack. The one I tore down had some broke rings and had eat up the shaft and housing or manifold around the shaft. My used parts supplier said that this is very common on the 450C. JD wants over$700 for the shaft and over$600 for the manifold. If there is any questions you want to ask ,Feel free to E-mail me and I will be glad to help.I forgot to mention that when I tore it down, I found that the trans case was cracked from top to bottom .JD wants $4700 for the case and it wound up costing $2000 used. This also turns out to be a very common problem.

I have 76 jd 450c crawler loader. Can you tell me a good place to find used parts, and where I can find generic new parts. I am also looking for a 4 in 1 bucket or a way to put a thumb on the bucket I have. I have had no luck in finding any plans for building implements for this either (post pounder, 4 in 1 bucket etc). Any help would be appreciated. bryon bpercival@shaw.ca

check the oil level first....there are 3 clutch packs...one each for High , Low, and reverse....there is an adjustment that controls the aggressiveness of the clutch engagement , which also effects the engagement pressure...usually if the pressure is set too low, it will hesitate in all shift sequences,,, but its worth a try to check out . Once it starts acting up you can try holding your foot on the foot brake pedal (stand on it !!!) and shift from neutral to high ...then from neutral to low...then from neutral to reverse...the engine should either stall or overpower the brakes...if it runs like it has a torque converter in it in all speeds (H -L-R) then most likely the pressure is low ...if it only slips in one speed (reverse for example , then you are looking at some serious time and money !!

Dip stick is under the seat for the 450. It is screwed in. You could have low oil level or a pluged filter. There are two oil filters for the transmission, one up front in front of the radiator by the oil cooler, that is a spin on and is the same as the engine oil filter and is easy to change. The other is in the bottom of the transmission and comes out throu a flange on the side of the transmission, its a basterd to change as you must drain the trans to do it. Don't continue to run as you are or you will burnout the clutch packs in the transmission. Lots of work and BUCKS to fiX!! Good Luck
