I recently picked up a D-6 8U dozer with a suspect starting engine and got lots of advice on how to "patch" it together to keep it going. (Thanks to everyone who responded!) Alas, it now seems evident that the only thing left to do is remove the starting engine and either rebuild it or replace it. Two main questions: 1. Are there such things as good rebuilt starting engines available intact, so I could just pull the old one and drop in the "new" one? Probably would be more expensive, but quicker. 2. If the thing to do winds up being to rebuild the existing starting engine, are there good manuals available that might walk a novice mechanic through the rebuild? Are parts a big problem? My guess is that the thing is pretty much trash inside -- the previous owner had not changed the crankcase oil in about two years (or more) and somehow the oil had been thinned badly by gasoline (bad rings??) Anyway, he just kept using it -- now there's almost no compression, and when it does run the crank pulley actually travels an inch or so in & out on its bearings. I don't have any experience with these engines, but with its history, I don't have much hope for any of the moving parts. Much thanks.

Pete

Hello Pete, re your concerns about your starting engine. #1 I do not think you will have much luck trying to find someone who has a rebuilt unit on their shelf. You might try outfits that are in the used tractor parts business however if they have one it is hard to say what kind of condition it is in. #2 As for information on how to recondition your engine have you checked with your local Cat Dealer. They should be able to provide you with this even if it is only copies of the info you need. From what you describe about your engine I would think you might find major problems where the thrust bearing has worn out completely and the crank is wearing into the block. For your information the parts to repair these engines is very costly. It used to be cheaper to recondition a Chevy V8 than to recondition a 2 cylinder pup engine. What you should do is get prices for all the parts that you think you might need, including machineing costs, and compare this with what it would cost to convert to 24 Volt electric starting. Good luck.

Pete, look under the pinion and see if you have a cover there with 3 bolts. If so you might want to go with a direct electeric 24 volt starter. To do this right you should also change the precombustion chambers to some that will take glow plugs, if you need the machine in winter.
