Would anyone know of a place or someone who might have a 3204 CAT engine that would fit in a D3. We sold our old 79 D3 to a local retired farmer to do a little putter work around his place. We told him from the start that the engine was weak and should be rebuilt (used a lot of oil but carried good oil pressure). Well he changed the oil and ran it about an hour and no.2 rod went through the side. he let it run untill he found the proublem with the oil coming through the radiator. I dont think it can be saved. We sold it on good faith that it would run as long as he needed it so we gave him his money back and now we need to get it fixed back up its to good of a machine to just junk. thanks

Sorry about your misfortune on the D3;I recently bought a 910 loader with a 3204 engine. Almost immediately afterwards a customer[i have a junkyard] hauled me two with large left side inspection ports. They had been power units and came apart big time. They are basically half of a 3208;but that doesn't help on the block.if you decide to sell as is,contact me,we could use it.

Hello Murray, The first thing you need to do is to get the arrangement number or part number from your failed engine. This is the build list for the 3204 in your machine. Next would be to try businesses that dismantle tractors to see if they can help you. You can also try your local Cat Dealer to see if they have a used parts department. I just checked the web site for Finning and they list a 3204 rebuilt engine part number is 7C5037. Good luck.

Thanks len I already know about the arrangemet no. and all that our local Cat dealer (cleavland Bros.) ran a serach and came up dry. aparently the D3 is popular and they are striped and sold as soon as they come in to sallavge. We will proubably end up buying the short block from CAT for some major $$$. About half what we sold it for. Bad luck seems to follow us this year.

Murray I know we had this conversation a while back but things are different now. If you have a major hole in the block go this route and get one with a head then switch all your stuff over. You have other things to do with your time and that is money too. If you can use it a bit and get some pay back that way then sell it later and you can sleep at night. I know from how you dealt with the situation you are an honest man, the machine is worth a lot to the right guy. Good luck with it.

Arrrg, that was bad luck Murray. If nobody here comes up with anything for you, try the ACMOC site. I think a lot of guys there deal in parts and one may be near you. How is the D5 you got running?

thanks bob, The D5 is a 97 with a 3046 engine will go oil change to oil change with out needing any(4650 hours). Defently the 3046 is an improvment in the small CATS. its a lot smother machine than the D3 was. I realy liked the D3 but would hate to go back to it after the D5. Would recomend the D3 for someone starting out but a lot of our work was to big for it.

Murray, did the rod break and come through the side or just pound the block from loosing the bearing and crack it open? Had a 955 once have a thrust bearing fall out(torque lost a snapring and pushed on the thrust wearing one to nothing)the thrust bearing bounced around and finally got between the rod and the side of the block and cracked it open. We got it welded and mains linebored and used the block again. Those old 3's never gave that much trouble they were very simple machines. Hard to say what to do, repair as cheaply as possible but right or take the hit and sell as is for someone else to fix up. If you do the work your self you may need to work it a season to get some money back and hope nothing else happens, I guess you have a lot of machines if you ever need a backup machine it might be worth fixing it your self, I don't know. I would sooner fix an engine than buy a used one from my experiance with used engines anyway used parts are okay, you can see what you get but assembled components can be another story.
