The tracks on the D-20 are tensioned with a grease gun. Use a wrench and open the relief valve, you might need to use a come-a-long to pull the cylinder back. This will give you space to work and make the job easier. Raise your front end with the blade, then jack and block the rear end. Set the chain on the sprocket first, using pry bars and a winch or portable hoist. Once you have the chain on the sprocket, line up the track with the idler wheel. Have a helper start the dozer and lock up the steering brake on the side not affected. Leave the throttle at idle and have your helper very slowly ease the clutch out. Using a pry bar, help the chain over the idler flange and top roller. If done correctly the track will slip back into place. Then take a grease gun and retension the track. You possibly have some worn components in your undercarriage to cause your track to come off. Sometimes early maintenance will save you big bucks later.

well here is how i done it. i picked the front up with the blade the back up with the three point of another tractor, so that side is off the ground use the engine to pull the track so the slack is in the top. then take a another tractor an a chain an hook on each side of the track acouple of feet back from the front roller, crossing the chain an release the track an pull it using the third tractor an pull it over the front roller. that is how we have done it. sounds like alot of work but it is alot easier then then the other of pry bars. if you only have one extra tractor pick the back end up an block it then go around the front an pull the track.

You could do like the chiltons manual says,
reverse procedure.HA. Thats a hard question,Usually just common sense and what I use,B.F.F.I. Brute Force and F#$@ing Ignorance. tracks are kind of a case by case scenario.pry bars and come a longs.just don't lose any fingers

Main strength and awkwardness is what I use most times LOL, but seriously theres alot of variables that go with this job, depends on where track is off at inside, outside front or back, depends on where the machine is, up against a stump or tree, etc. first thing to do is get all the slack in the track that you can (loosen the adjuster), another tractor would be a great help to do pushing or pulling, also would help if you had that side completely off the ground to allow you to line up the track on the bottom rollers if its off that bad.

Dee- I was always fortunate enough to have another dozer nearby. If not then pull your pins or masterlink and drag track back under tractor; slack off all adjustment; for low track pull to the front; for high drive pull to the rear. You will need an extra operater; a large lifting machine like a heavy forklift is also a world of help
