My Old Man asked me to look for info. concerning a Gearmatic winch on an old JD crawler he bought. Age, make, model is uncertain....but circa 1950's,
2-cylinder. Looking for links, leads, anything that will get me a manual or parts list for this winch, and any info. on these old crawlers would be appreciated also

All you guys need to know is paccarwinch.com. They own Braden, Cargo, and Gearmatic. They're very helpful on old equipment info. KP

The Gearmatic winches were used on a number of small dozers and log skidders. Caterpillar used them on their 518 skidders up until the eighties, when you then could get a Cat winch. Tree Farmer, International Paylogger, and a number of others used the model 19 and the later model 119. They were a very good log winch, if, and I mean if, you kept them dry, adjusted and in constant use. The trouble came from sitting for a period of time and moisture with the clutch and brake bands and built up dust. They could become cantankerous and sometime dangerous when out of adjustment. With a little proper care and TLC they were as dependale as any for the use intended. Like OZ said, you could start with Case or even JD or even Cat to find info. You might even try a site search on the net. Something sticks in my mind that they might have been bought out by Braden Winch, this is just a hunch. Happy Winching!!

I Have a gearmatic 8A and the parts book and operating manual. The manual also covers the 8G. I have been able to get parts from a local JD dealer,(R. N. Johnson, North Walpole NH) but they are getting harder to find.

What model is your winch?

Would that be Hubbard of Hubbard Farms?

That is where I got the manual for mine. It was about 15 years ago. I haven't tried to get any parts lately, but most of the things that go wrong, clutches, brakes, could be fixed with auto supply house parts. I made a new brake band and relined it. The hydraulics use automobile brake cylinder parts.

Bradley - I have a Gearmatic winch sitting in my yard which has "Case" on it, and a # for size. I don't know anything about them either, but Case would be a good place to start.
