Please Help If You Can.
I have an old Allis HD5 with a stuck Steering Clutch. I am trying to remove it, but it won't come out. I have removed all the bolts, Proped the release handle back(doesn't seem to make a difference what position it is in), Put a 2 ton cable hoist on a steel strap around the drum (The break band rusted out & needs to be replaced, any ideas where to get one?), Lifted till the hoist was at its limit..... ...NOTHING. That thing won't move. Am I missing some trick (I have the manuals & don't see anything I haven't tried)?

Thanks Weekend

Are you sure you got all the bolts out,it's easy to miss one on bottom.I have a hd5 with the steering clutches going back together, just came in to cool off.

Two things come to mind. Have you removed the brake band? It usually comes out with the clutch and is used for a lifting strap. The anchor pins for the band can be difficult to remove. Then you mentioned the release lever. Sometimes it is best to remove the linkage at the lever on top of the housing and move the lever opposite of it's normal travel. This will move the release assenbly away from the clutch pack. and allow it to come out. The flanges may have some rust but a little sideways movement with a bar should free them. As for a band I may have one here I will try to check into that let me know how you make out with this. Chuck

I had an hd6g and have had the clutches out a few times. the two hubs on either side of the clutch packs may have a small lip on them which helps in aligning the hub to the mating part in the pack. take a flat screw driver and gently tap it inbetween the hub and clutch pack on each side while maintaining a minimum of pressure on the lifting mechanism. it should pop apart and slip right out. make sure and keep track of which bolts come from which side. one side is 1/2 inch longer than the other and they cannot be swapped.
