I have two jd tractors that I have restored, a JD60 and a JDH but I know very little about crawlers. I am looking at a 40 crawler that has no sereal number and needs a lot of work. I think it is a 4 roller and every thing seems to be there. The sheet metal is in excelent shape and is off the tractor and inside. The engine is not locked up and I think it is in fair shape. The tractor has a front blade and pto and three point hitch with down pressure. The trackes look good. The tractor has set for several years. What are some things I should look for and what is the going price for a crawler Thanks for any help JOE

I have a 40/420 (40 engine/420 running gear) in the barn. It has a Lord loader and a very nice Gearmatic winch on the rear. I have had it for 30 years and it has 1,000s of hours on it. It is another retirement project. Around here (New Hampshire) they go for $2,000 to $4,000. For the high money it would be in real nice condition.

I have rebuilt mine from the floor up twice, so have a working knowledge of what can and will go wrong. Check the final drive housings for cracks in the bearing areas. This was a continual problem and they made several changes in the reinforcing to stop the cracking. Check the steering clutches and brakes. The clutches will feeze up if not used and the brakes may not wok at all. The steering is a two stage process. First the clutch releases and then pulling the lever back further applies the brake. You should be able to steer it easily by pulling on the steering levers. If great force is requied, something is wrong.Check the play in the rolls. Lift up the tractor, place some blocking under it and then check the bearings in the rolls. Any more questions, you can email me. Have fun and be careful.

Joe: I would check out the sprockets make sure the teeth are flat not worn to a point.Check the rollers on the tracks and see how much they are worn...Check the front rail and see how much more you can go with the adjustment for track tightness .I was layed up from a roter cuff operation and one of my tractor buddied knows I like crawlers. He was at a farm auction one Sat and bought me a John Deere 40-C in good running condition with five rollers and 12 inch snow tracks in nice condition for $1,500. I'll tell you I was so happy I dident sleep for a few days...I really dont know what the going price is but I was happy to pay that for a 40-C (with a bulldozer blade on it)..What is the seller asking for the one your looking at ?GOOD LUCK... Obie

Hello,
With all due respect, don't linger about pricing and buying the 40C. Once it's priced, it probably won't be around long. I tried for almost a year to convince an owner of a 420C to price it to me. She did and it was a little higher than I had in mind and told her I'd have to think about it. I went back by 9:00 the next morning and to my severe shock, it had been sold. I learned my lesson and still kick myself when I look at the photos I had taken of the 420C.
My advice is 'don't linger'.

Rodger, Did you finally get one ? There is one for sale locally, haven't had a CLOSE look, but it has a high-lift loader - they are asking $6000 Canadian - about $4000 US

Joe, Go to "view archives" on the opening page for this forum, go to "search" for this board, key in "buying crawler", and you'll find a lot of info from previous postings. Good place to start. HTH, Ron

I bought a JD Crawler 40C about a year ago with a a Holt, Independence Oregon built Blade and JD disc for $3200. I thought I payed a lot for it but it has already paid for itsself in all the landscaping and roadwork I have done. I kicks A'' over any kind of wheeled tractor of that size. We tested it against a JD model M rowcrop and I pulled it around the field like a toy.

If you do not buy the 420C I would like a chance at it as I need lots of parts.
