What is the difference between track plate, grouser and street pad on a dozer? Track overhaul info uses first two terms without distinction between the two. Does street pad accomodate travel on paved surface? I need clarification, please. PC

The track plate is the plate that bolts to the track chain, A street pad is what a loader uses, usually three short grouser bars either made into or welded on the track pad. A dozer pad is usually one tall bar on the track pad. Years ago there used to be a true street pad, the track plate had rubber blocks bolted to it so damage to roads was minimal, as well as cushioning the ride somewhat. A growser is the bar(s) that is made into or welded to the track plate. Growser bar can be purchased at a track shop and welded to the pads as needed.

Just a guess, but I wonder if track plate is like track pad, a generic name for any style of track pad, whereas a grouser pad and street pad are a reference to a specific style of pad.

Yes, a street pad is designed to be run on hard surface, or any surface that you do not want the disruption of a grouser pad, and unltimate traction are not a concern.

Hope this helps, and if I am wrong, someone corrects my error.

Thanks for the info; just got an OC46, loader with street pads; several have cracks; can these be repaired by welding? One is has a chunk broken out of it. Is it safe to go ahead and run the loader with that chunk broken out or should I opt for a replacement ASAP? Also, does track have to be removed to replace a pad? PC

if the cracks are just in the pads weld them up and go to work broken pads are not critical i run a d8 that has several broken pads that are bent and havent found big enough hammer to straighten them and weld my opinion anyways mike
