I need help. I've got the bug to buy a small dozer/loader. Have 27 acres of crab apples to clear and a small pond to build. Have up to $10K to spend. Need to pull with F250 Diesel and 14K trailer. Want something decent condition. What should I look for and where should I look. Dealers in mid atlantic area seem to have nothing. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Hey Jim, as I'm sure you know equipment values vary alot from region to region, out here in Ga. 10k would get you a fairly decent JD 350 size machine probably a B model (dry steering clutches) late 60's to mid 70's vintage, and your truck and trailer combo would haul this fine, as long as you have working trailer brakes, theres alot of discussion about this topic at another site I visit and alot of people think it would be better to hire the work done instead of buying a older tractor and dealing with maint./repair issues but personally I'm handy with a wrench and would much prefer to own a tractor of my own, as far as where to look try the trader online site www.traderonline.com you can search states or regions by machine make or price, etc. Oh and by the way I would recommend a loader over a dozer for the work you describe. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I've kind of decided on the 350 also. Was thinking about a 440 but parts availability and all the talk on this site about weak finals have discouraged me. Also think loader would be more useful after the initial work is done. Finding a good 350 is not easy. Saw one sold at Rodgers auction for $4800 before I was ready to buy now I kick myself. Guess I'll just keep looking.

I all so was looking for a Deere 350, but along the way i found a great Case 450 for about the same $$. I bought it, and it's been a trouble free machine. Now, i'm happy i didn't get the Deere, as this Case is a great machine that's saved and made me quite a bit of $$. It's a lot nicer to run too. As to hauuling it, it's not much heavier that a Deere 350, and it will out work it, as it should. Robert

Robert...NICE looking machine. Got two? I've read on here before that the Case is an underrated machine. Don't see many for sale. Saw a 310 some time ago for sale in Ohio, but it looked a little too small. If you find a case you don't want let me know, especially if it's in as good condition as yours.

I just bought a 1970 Case 450D for 10K and it is my first dozer. I am very satisfied with it. Need to redo the brakes and track tensioners. Other than that, it is ready to work. I have 280 acres of woods that I am going to build a home on. Only taking down small trees on maybe 10 acres. Building a couple of roads and such. I looked a long time to find this machine. Bought from an individual. Dealers wanted 15K for half the machine. Good Luck.
