I worked for the NSW Gov. Railways in the 80's & they were using these engines in there Rail Motors & small Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives the Loco's had 4 of these engines powering them, 2 engines coupled together back to back , through a gearbox driving one axle with forward & reverse in the final drive. Before the gearbox they had a Alison lock-up Tourque Converter on the back of each engine. These engines were worked flat out 90% of the time & never had any major problems with them. But They were serviced regularily. They had been using these since the mid 50's.

Ben, I worked for a company in the 60's that ran some 6-110's in their equipment. The main problem that we had with them was cracked heads. Too big of an engine to have a single unit head on it. Don't know about Buda's Lew

American dredging co had a 6-110 in a medium sized tug boat. In seven years around the boat Augusta I dont remember it needing much work at all. They had 2 71s on welders and 3-71s in derricks and 4-71s in derricks also andv 16 567s detriot electromotive train engines on the dredge itself. plusa smaller gm engine on other dredges. IM not sure but I believe they were 267 cu in per cyl jobs. MANY OF THEM WERE RUN 24 HRS A DAY FOR MONTHS AT A TIME NON STOP. OCCASIONAL PROBLEMS BUT NOT FREQUENT. tHEN I WENT TRUCKING AND SAW MANY GUYS LOOSE THEIR SHIRTS WITH 8V 71S. we called them boat anchors.
