I would like to buy a backhoe (tractor, loader, hoe) to do some dirt work around my place. Digging septic tank, house foundation, remove a million cedars, break up hardpan in the garden area, and 500 other things that'll need doing. I have no idea what to look at, or what to get. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Terry O.

Had a JD 400A. It did everything I wanted, then sold it. Was a 1976 shipped over from Europe (grey market machine). 400 0r 500 (American-made) are rarer & sell cheaper than JD 310, 410 but do just as good a job.

if you want a real backhoe then i would sudjest a 750 ford.. its a great front loader TOO!, lifting capasity is 10,000lbs and the hoe cant be beat for power and speed..i bought one new in 76 and its still going strong.. excellent for digging foundations, will handle a 3 foot bucket heaped full with no problem.. frames are really strong and virtually unbrakeable.. 3 speed auto with shuttle shift.only one problem with them tho, they weigh over 8 ton and when they get in the mud they are like a big elephant..

Case is by far the best value for the dollar, easy to get parts for and easy to work on.If you are using it around the home there is no need to buy a newer hoe even an old W-3 or 530 gas powered one is quite capable of everything you are speaking of.Make sure its not all patched together with welds and the pins and byushings are not too sloppy.Basically if the tractor runs and drives well and the loader and hoe are not beat to death you should be fine. There are many reasonible priced Case hoes out there.

Caterpillar makes good hoes, lotsa $$$, Deere is the same way, Ford (New Holland) is a very strong and fast hoe but in my experience there too powerful for the frame there on and tear themselves apart (older model 555's, newer ones look alot heavier) but less $$$, Case makes a reliable hoe and often underrated, value versus dollars spent I would say Case has 'em all beat, and if you see a JCB hoe RUN AWAY!!!!!

Gatractorman, you are going to have to fill me in on the problems with JCB.

I keep you posted on my 743 repower, after I rebuild a Nissan Forklift and 8N Ford.

JCB's will do the job, plenty of power and very heavy built but they are a electrical wiring nightmare it seems that everything has an electric solenoid to operate it, much like the new Bobcats LOL, Hey I need another B/C, sold mine and could sell another one if I had it.

Case is not the best there is but there is a lot of them around still working and there is a lot parts available some cheap from several sources. I suggest a 580C or later. They are easy to work on and service.
