I have a JD450 with a bolt head off on the cross bar between the tracks.
It is one of the two large bolts facing to the center. Probably been this way for some time. It is too far recessed to weld on. How hard is it to remove. I've never tackled this large of a bolt before. Would an extra large easy out work along with a left handed drill bit to loosen?

Phil

After heating up the area surrounding the bolt I have used candle wax pushed into the bolt hole to lubricate the broken bolt and then turned it out with a heavy duty easyout

Like Tim, said about these special welding rods I, used them to remove broken bolts in track frame . I,use a short length of that will fit inside the hole as close to the bolt size . Stick the pipe up there then stick your welding rod in side the pipe and have someone turn the welding mechine on to weld your pipe to the bolt , then take a pipe wrench and back the broken bolt out.

Drill a hole in it with a cobalt bit, large enough to accomodate a large E-Z out. I wouldnt use a spiral E-Z out, but a tapered splined E-Z out.Use a rosebud torch tip and heat up the material AROUND the broken bolt cherry red. It should come right out.

If it's a big bolt you might try drilling into it and threading the hole and double nut a hard bolt in the bigger bolt,if theres enough room to work.
I have used large allen wrenches for easy out's,cut off the short end and use a socket.

You can buy special stick welding rod that is designed for pulling studs. Xergon is one distributor and the rod is called stud puller. It has worked for me in the past. Yes it is designed for pulling studs in a recessed hole, even if the whole is threaded. You can look at there web site xergon.com
