1950's TD9 Diesel Problems

I have bleed the diesel lines according to the manual but I can not get it to start on diesel.

Does anyone have some tricks to get it to start on diesel?

Pull the valve cover and look at the starting valves...these are operated by the lever that switches you over to diesel.If it was stored with the lever in the gas position the valves tend to stick open. These valves open a chamber that has the spark plugs and lowers the compressoin to run on gas.When closed they raise the compression to be able to run on diesel. If they are stuck spray some pb blaster or kroil oil on the lifter and tap gently most times they will free up. The the books tell you to switch over to gas and run awhile to let the motor cool down some agree and some disagree but you need to make shure you move the lever to the diesel position when the motor has stopped running this prevents the starting valves from warping

Matt,if you have fuel squirting out of the line from the final filter to the pump,and low pressure at the injector lines,you will probably have to pull the pump and get it repaired.I had the same problem after letting the pump sit for several months. Set #1 on top dead center befor you do,it will be easier to time afterwards.

Matt,if the inj pump has a press gage its mounted right on top,one of mine has it and one doesn't.However,it only measures press to the mechanical pumps in the inj pump.If you do not have fuel coming out of the inj bleeds,it will not run. You might try cracking the fitting going from the final fil.to the pump,should be pressure while running on gas

If I loosen that line diesel squirts everywhere. However, I took one of the lines off of the top of the injector pump and it is barely squirting anything out. Where/what do I do now?

Like Matt, ask how much fuel are you get when try to start . Check the vent in the fuel cap have had dust stop them up, also you might check the fuel cut off valve take the fuel line lose and check flow of fuel . There is screen on some of the old type fuel cut off valves ,also have found all kinds goods in the bottom fuel tanks acorns, cig.packsrolled up and other assortted things.

Matt,does your inj pump have a pressure gage on it,it should indicate normal press when running on gas.Fuel should squirt out of inj's about 6-8 inches when you open bleeds. Check behind carb to be sure its switching to diesel when you operate lever,I had a pin fall out once and it wasn't switching.Good luck !

No, I don't have a gauge. Where does the gauge bolt into the system. If I got a regular gauge, how high of pressure would it need to be?

Are you are first starting it on gas? It has to start on gas first, then switch over to diesel after a short warm-up time (minute or so).

Yes. I run it on gas and then switch to diesel. Every once in a while I'll get it to pop like it's going to start on diesel then it dies. How hard should diesel shoot out of the injector bleeders? Are there any filters I should be looking for in the injector pump? Can I get a rebuilt injector pump?
