IH 500 Questions

Last week I purchased an IH 500 crawler with a ??Sherman?? loader at an auction. This Thurs. I plan to haul it home. It has a gas engine, power reverser and an excellent U/C. I plan to remove the loader later on and build a 6-way blade for it to do grade work with it.

1. I was wondering if anyone out there has one, and if so what are their weak points, and what to avoid or keep an eye on while running one.

2. Also, does any one know where to buy parts for these tractors?

3. Lastly, how do I find out what year it is, and are there any sites dedicated to these machines?

Thanks for any help.

Hey guys,
Thank you all for your posts!! It turns out I ended up with a '66 500 gas(2431). It has a Sherman loader from a ford mounted to it. The loader is not very usable and appears to only have been installed for the last years of its life. The tractor once belonged to the state of TENN., and shows VERY little wear. Whoever put the loader on it cut all of the limbrisers and grille guard off of it. The tinwork is immacculate, and the U/C probably would score a 105-110 out of 120. I could'nt be happier with it, after checking the fluids and filling it with gasoline, I pushed some stumps out of a burn pile, and it seemed to work well powerwise.

Now... to build a 6-way dozer blade!!!!!

Does anyone have any measurments, pictures, or even a blade for sell???

Just ordered manuals to do rebuild for my 1966 - 500 --- Check Tractor Manuals section @ Yesterday's Tractor - Marketplace, for IHC - 500, 500C or 500E crawler

If its a very early one,, it will be near identical to the T4-T5-TD5 series. It will share nothing with the T-340 series. On the early 500's, the entire drive-train was identical to the T series made in Canada. (transmission, fast-reverser,T/A and final-drives just to name a few)
The later models did change drastically in the drive-train and under carrige. (I used a spare 500 parts crawler for my restoration)

Shawn, Thanks for the info! Your link is awsome, some of the pics didn't come up, but the others more than made up for it. These little crawlers are quite fascinating! Later, pat

I have a 500 gas dozerand i believe it has the same engine as a farmall A 164 cid and the caseih dealer would have parts for it. The parts for the rest of the machine are starting to dry up from the dealers, but you can find them on this site. One thing to be careful on the dozer is getting water down the exhaust pipe which will go into the pistons and down to the crankcase. I have one for 8 years and have done a lot of work with it and it hase a 6way blade. If you need any more info Email me i will try to help you WJO

I was wondering if anyone knew the difference between a 500 and a t-340.It has a smaller engine but I believe they share a lot of other parts like the blade assy. Don't know about the others but would like to since I have a td-340 and will need parts one day. The 500 is a newer machine and might be easier to get parts for it and use them on my 340. Thanks to anyone who could help.

Hello Pat, ----- 17 / Sept. / 2002 -----

There is a SERIAL NUMBER tag up on the panel by your feet as your seting on the crawler seat. I have the SERIAL NUMBERS for the International "500" / "500C" / and the "500E" crawler.

Get that Serial Number and we'll see what we come up with.

Regards, Milton

Milton,
Thank you for your post, I will not be able to get the number until Thur. However, I searched all of the "IH 500" posts last night and found several that you sent to other owners and I copied down all of the S/N breaks. Thank you for your help, keep up the good work, Pat
