Does the whole track assembly need to come off in order to get to the final drive (R.H. side)? Can I get it apart by just removing the rear sprocket? I'm hoping that I can get the clutch in operating condition so I can try to pull the thing around the pasture and free up the engine. Thanks, Clueless in Kansas

yes! the track has to come off first to inable room to get the finaldrive off.. here is a little advise,, you indicated that the engine is stuck,,yes you can pull it ans sometimes if the engine is just stuck a little it may come loose, but since all the parts a re very expensive for your little JD i would sudjest not trying to pull it, mostlikeley you will brake something, driveshaft or something, i would take the head off to see just whats up with the engine, you may be able to hone it and lube it up with kroyoil and may be able to get it loose by hand, it maynot be the pistons stuck, it could be the valves also, in this case if you pulled it it would mostlikeley brake the cam or timeing gears or bend a pushrod ot brake a rockerarm.take it from someone who has learned it the hard way!

I would agree...pull the head. I'm rebuilding a IH 384 tractor now. All four pistons have broken ring lands. From the looks of the sleeves water got in there and froze everything up. They got it turning again but tore up the pistons. Only thing I can think of is it got locked up with water and/or had water on top of the pistons. Best guess is the former because the rods are ok. A little patience and oil could have saved it.

Good Luck with yours,
Rob

Very good point, indeed. The possibility of a stuck valve never crossed my mind. Off with its head!
