We've been working with this for a while but I'd thought I'd post the question.

Mid 60's JD 350c (but with a blade), Seems to do this more after it's been working for a while. When your pushing a load something will start slipping and it'll make a noise. The noise (and here is the hard part) sounds like a high pitched, fast moving gear slip. I don't think it's in the final drive because it sounds like whatever is slipping is turning fast. The noise will vibrate throu the whole dozer. It also sort of sounds like someone using an air powered sheet metal cutter if you ever heard one of those. Next 3-4 times you load it it'll hook up just fine. Something in the reverser maybe?

I also have the same problem as Billy Howell just a few posts below. You'll hit a brake to turn and the track will just stop, no noise nothing. No hydraulics on these steering brakes, that's long been gone.

It's not the best dozer in the world but it sure beats a shovel.

Thanks,
Rob

A mid 60's model will have dry steering clutches and the noise you describe sounds like when dry clutches slip they will work ok for a while when you first start using it but as it gets warmed up they slip more and more till you finally got nothing, its also indicitave of the problem you describe when trying to turn, remove the 2 square plates under the seat (1 on each side) and with a flashlight look down in there and see if there is any oil and also look to see that the throw-out bearing is not riding on the pressure plate all the time and keeping it depressed somewhat, need some free travel in the lever before T.O. bearing contatcs the P.P.

Thanks, I'll have a look. I had to adjust one of the steering brakes last year. The owner (my brother in law) had been running it for a few years with only one track working. Once I started to use it I said to heck with this, I'll fix it. It was dry in there with black soot if I recall. I'll refer to the manual and have a closer look.

Rob
