I have the opportunity to purchase an 1947 oliver HG crawler with a 5 ft blade from a friend of mine. I was wondering is this crawler large anough to use for brush removal. I have approx. 15 scres I would like to clear off over the next few months. The land is old pasture covered in brush and small trees, up to about 6" dia. Any thoughts

I have an oc-3 that I've used for about 5 yrs for the same type work, it performs reasonably well as long as you understand its limits and work within them. A 6" water oak in sandy soil sure, but a 6" sweet gum in any ground is best left alone. Also, 15acres with this size/vintage machine is pretty ambitious. Absolutely watch those limbs!! Last weekend I had one pierce the top of the battery, I never saw it coming! Cleaned up the mess, and considered myself fortunate. I've learned my lesson!

Remember this is a small machine. If you go slow and are careful you will probably get the job done. Be careful of falling branches. My next door neighbor was clearing some trees on his property with a Cat D4D without a canopy and of course for him everything has (had) to be in high gear. He pushed into a tree and looked up just as a small stick(about 2ft. long and 3in. across) hit him across the juglar part of the neck and killed him. I believe they call these falling branches widow makers. Sometimes for the price of the machine you would be better off to hire someone and not have trouble or be fixing some expensive parts on an old machine.
