I am looking at a IH 500G crawler that has a PTO and 3 point hitch on it, I suspect it was in agricultural use.
My question is, the serial number is designated as a H1267 TA.
Does anyone know when this machine may have been made and what does the TA stand for?
This thing is disasembled and I wonder if it has power shift, how do I tell?

Tom,
According to the records, it is a 1966 (S/N 891-2500)! I have a 500 gas (S/N 2431), without PTO, 3pt, or Blade. If you run across any extra of these accessories at a reasonable price, let me know. Thanks, Pat

TA stands for torque amplifier. no it aint got no power shift, you have got turn cluches not power shift, and i'd say yo've got a 1969.

Can anyone explain what is meant by a torque amplifier?
The machine has excellent tracks and rollers, the sprockets are pointed, the current owner has the head off because he thought it lacked power and may have needed valves. Inspection shows them to be fine and I suspect the machine just needed some tune up work. He's not a mechanic, I am a pretty good mechanic, but not at all familiar with this machine.
The owner says the right clutch slips? The pedal is in a partially depressed position, but he says it drives fine other wise.
Is it worth $1700.00 if it runs?

Tom,
If the inside of the engine looked good, (wear-wise) and it runs, I wouldn't mind giving that for it, especially since you can do the work on it youself. As far as the pedals, the one on the left is the main cluth pedal, and the one on the right is the main brake(stops both sides).

I do not know much about the T/A question, but if it is like a T/A on a rubber tire tractor, when the T/A is engaged, it reduces the ground speed by appoximately 1/3. This "amplifies" torque through planetary gear reduction(like an automotive automatic transmission).

Hope this helps, later, pat

Thank you Pat and Lindsay, Knowing that the right pedal is a brake makes me feel better about it.
My old crawler had a very much different set up, and anything I have run since was fairly new.
