Need some pointers-

The generator on our crawler is shot. I would like to change it out with a aternator.
Can I find one that fits the existing mountings?
Is there a specific type I should buy? Any tips about it would sure come in handy. Mike

There are several good articles on this subject on this site. Look under Articles (Research & Info). One wire conversions work okay, but if you want to keep the warning light operative you'll need to do it a little differently. Some of the articles have schematics and can guide you step-by-step. Hope this helps!

On the 2 wire Bosch's I mentioned, one post is the output and the other is the hot or exciter (?) wire. This is the post that went to the light if I recall. We installed a diode to keep the 12v going TO the alternator and not back to the switch. The diode also kept some of our fail safe devices (low oil pressure and high temp kill switches) from getting juice back from the alternator.

Ahhh the good ole days.

I have done the one wire alternater conversion MANY times. Highly recommend it. My only other observation others failed to mention is where to get it. Personally I get a kit from JC Whitney & convert either a used one or get a new one from Autozone for $20 if you don't want the lifetime warrantee. You can use late 70's -early 80's GM alternater. I ask for a 79 Caprice with air cond. at Autozone & that gets you a 50 amp Alt.You'd lose the warrantee soon as you made the conversion/why pay for it? JC Whitney also sells them ready to bolt on .... Enjoy....

It's kinda simple. You take off the generator, throw it away or put it on the shelf. You mount the one wire alternator in the generators place ( belt drive ) Run the one wire from the alternator right to the battery positive side ( #10 wire ) through an amp gauge if you like, start the machine up & your charging...

I've never heard of a one wire but it sure sounds simple. I still have about 6 of some old bosch alternators I pulled off of diesel engines when I was a mechanic. We use to throw these things away because we couldn't use them in the oil fields. Everything had to use an air starter.

Anyway my comment is you can save your money by getting a smaller alternator. A 20-30 amp is all you need to just charge a battery. These little bosch's were 33a.

go with a delco one wire that is a easy switch the only thing you got to do is make a new mounting bracket witch is no big deal

get a one wire alternator so you dont have to mess with wiring up a voltage regulator. They are by far the simplist setup and are considerable cheaper.Just attach the hot wire to the alternator and then through the amp gauge and then to the battery. Good luck,David
