Mike, first off if the hole for the direct electric starter is not machined out and has a cover on it, I would try to fix the starting engine. If the hole is there, the guys at the ACMOC board can tell you where to get a starter with the right pinion to run with your ring gear. You can leave the old starting engine on if you like. And if you want to use the tractor in cold weather you should change the precombustion chambers to the type that will take glow plugs, this will also require a proper heat/start switch too.

I have done many pony to direct start conversions on Cat machines back in the sixties and cannot recall anyone that I done without having to change the ring gear on the flywheel because the pony engine type had spiral teeth and the direct start had straight teeth, that aside I used to change the generator and regulator using the existing wiring, change the precombustion chambers for the glow plug type, add a relay and heat start switch,I always had to remove the pony engine as well and the starter motor fitted in its place,Cat at that time supplied the conversion kits, you should look up parting out places for there must be lots of retired D4's
