I have some tractor price listings from the 1960s to the mid 1980s, while all the tractors and crawlers horse power is listed, in engine HP - presumably Standard brake horse power, the Caterpillar section is in Fly Wheel Horsepower and the article draws attention to this fact. What is the difference between FWHP and brake horsepower or is it just Cat jargon for the same thing?

I may be wrong but if it is rated like automotive HP, Flywheel HP is similar to what you can get on a Dyno at the Flywheel. Brake HP on the other hand is how much HP you can actually transmitt to on the ground. In a car, brake HP is much less than flywheel HP as you have losses in turning the transmission, drive shaft, and rear differential!!

Bob I am not sure what they mean in the sales literature but in the fuel setting information they give specs for HP with fan and without fan. This would be the extra HP you should get on a dyno when you are not using the fan. They also give the High Idle on dyno and in vehicle. The later is lower because you are driving the fan, generator/alternator hyd pump torque convertor etc. Full load however is always the same. The flywheel Hp/ brake Hp differance might be due to these items load on the engine in the tractor.
