I'm thinking of a new machine to replace a couple old junkers. I was very impressed by a New Holland skidsteer,BUT I was watching it work in perfect conditions. How are they in the snow?? I was thinking of using a plow not the bucket. Any ideas?? THANKS!

Thanks for the posts. My main uses for a machine are these...1)I maintain a small motocross track on my property. Mostly fixing ruts and changing jumps,ect...2)I would like to mow a small field with some sort of brush-hog. The field doesn't have to look good, just knock down the growth. AND last I would like to sit in the thing with the heat on and plow my driveway(long+paved)and a small(paved)parking lot. What do you think? I'm stuck between a small 4x4 tractor or a skidsteer. I kinda like the GEHL.Any thoughts?? THANKS again.

(speaking as a newbie skidsteer owner)

I don't think a skidsteer would be much good out
in a field. Compared to a tractor there isn't
much ground clearance and the wheels are much
smaller, so it's really easy to sink the wheels and get stuck.

Paul (who'll be picking up his new tire chains tomorrow)

CT,
I use a large NH L875 for snow removal with lots of driveway and concrete on an acre of ground. No chains and no slipping with oversize light material bucket and it works great. My unit weighs more than 7000 lbs. I have owned a bobcat 773 and wouldnt trade back for it. NH made John Deere skids until just a few years ago.

I use a Mustang skid steer to move snow in southern CT and have no problems. The only time i loose traction is when there is a solid sheet of ice under the snow.Tracks would probably solve that problem.

We put chains on the rear wheels of our Case 1845C, used the dirt bucket, never had a problem with the chains coming off, if you kept them tight. Push a lot of snow quickly without sliding all over.

CT, what else might you be using the machine to do? People I have talked to wouldn't buy another NH, didn't like it as well as what they had before, not as durable. The town here uses the small JD's with 4wd and a V plow for sidewalks. When they need to clean out heavy banks plowed in around bus shelters they have a small Kaboda backhoe loader. I think the tractors would be best for snow, but if you want to dig earth in the summer with it, the skidsteer would be a good trade off. I saw a large skidsteer around here with an 8' blade that clamped to the bucket floor. It would be good if you are doing big jobs, push areas clear then take it off and pile or load with the bucket.

We live in the fingerlakes area of NY and have used our skidsteer for going on 30 years to plow snow. Our frist was a small frame NH 425 had it for 25 years had to be carefull not to get hung up as traction was not the best in snow or even wet grass. But that said the speed and manneverabilty was good and the bucket made it better for moving snow out of places it could not be pushed. only one year (93) I could not move the snow and had to get out the dozer (4 foot drifts and the driveway sloped. I new I would get hung up) The dozer only better because of the size but is not as safe if it starts to slide it is like a 10 ton tobogen. Our new skid steer is a NH 485 and it is like night and day. The traction is 150% better and I can go places I would never have dreamed of with the 425. Would not have needed to get the dozer out in 93 if we would have had it back then. I don't think I woud buy one just for snow removel. Ours is mainly for cleaning the barn but this year we bought a auger and have worked it out drilling holes.

CT --

I've used a Case skid-steer for snow duty before -- used just the standard bucket and I'd have to say it was marginal at best. Neglecting the fact that a blade would have been easier, the other main problem was lack of traction -- was using the machine with the standard tires, no chains.

I suppose the tracked versions may be better but have no personal experience with them. Don't know how much snow you get in Ct. but I suppose it's at least as much as we do in Penna. As for me -- I wouldn't go out and buy a skid steer with the intention of using it as a snowplow, but if I needed it for some other primary duty it could double as one if need be.

they are used here in minn all over the place.
most guys use an oversize bucket.
for open parking lots the choice is a 4WD and plow, they're faster moving
but for close quarters, a skid steer can't be beat!

Going back 20+ years I plowed snow for a large shopping center in Upstate NY near Syracuse. We had a Bobcat 610 I used to load a sander and plow sidewalks as well as push banks back. It was amazing what the 610 would do. With a more modern higher capacity machine ,the results would be even better . I have operated newer machines and found them impressive. A water cooled machine would give you heater capability. The biggest limitations to a skid steer for snow plowing would be tendency to have trouble on ice-more noticable on hills, and limited visibility backing up(more of a factor if used in a high traffic area). Manueverability cant be beat and you can get blades and snowblowers as well as a bucket. This would be nice with a quick-attach bucket system. Good luck-JK

JK I posted above that I saw a clamp on blade to put on the bucket, about 8' wide I think. It clamps on the bucket floor, behind the cutting edge.
