We looked at a Case 580K back-hoe digger. Its in tidy shape with 6900 hrs. Its got the cummins 4 cyl. engine and new tyres on the back. We have no experience with case equipment. any comments on the 580K model and the quality of case diggers ? the engine sounded sweet and it wasnt slow moving off in any gears. who makes this gearbox (forward reverse shuttle with 1-4 gears) and is it reliable ? anything to look for and weak points,

thanks, Matt.

Hi Matt
That is a square looking machine, the 580K is a good machine, the things to look out for is the bottom kingpost pivot as it often gets overlooked when it should be greased, and above that have a look where the two slew rams are pinned together, make sure that they are intact, jack it up and check for play in the back wheels, make sure that the prop shaft to the front axle is intact and that the four wheel drive works, you need have no worry about the engine, the transmission is ok as well, that machine would be around 89/90 maybe?.the hydraulic hoses around the kingpost were a bit of a problem if they were not replaced properly other than that as someone who repairs construction machinery of all makes I rate them well.
Good Luck

well in 34 years i have had all brands of backhoes . sorry to say a 580 case is the best there is. had fords junk engines. had massey poor hoe swing drive. IH all junk hoe, loader, tractor. case is the best to get parts for because there tons of them out there and lots in the parts yards. thats what i have found in 34 years of a owner of a co.that makes a living with them down time is $$$$$$. go with a case. but i still have a soft spot for my old massey
