I have a 1974 Ford 4500 Diesel Tractor Loader Backhoe, which I just aquired. One of the swing cylinders on the 19-551 backhoe has a broken end. The hydraulic co I brought it to says the rod has been hitting the back of the cylinder, causing it to bow out. Has anyone ever heard of this, and if so, what would cause it. The swing chains are in good shape, and the hoe stops look intact.

Any ideas would really help, as I don't want to fix the rod and have it break again..

Thanks!!

Thanks for the info...come to find out my swing cylinders had been bottoming out so hard that they mushroomed out the back of the cylinders. Best I can tell that allowed them to retract too far, putting too much pressure on the cylinders...causing it to break. It did break right at the end...the eye.
Well, after one new rod, to new endplugs...one in each cylinder, and alot of money...the hoe seems to be ok again.
Thanks for your advice.
Bob

THE SWING CYLINDERS ON A 4500 BACKHOE ARE SINGLE ACTING. THEY PULL ON THE CHAIN AND ARE ALWAYS IN TENSION. THERE IS A CUSHIONING VALVE PLUMBED BETWEEN THE TWO CYLINDERS AND THE CONTROL VALVE.THIS CAUSES THE FOLLOWING CYLINDER TO HAVE TO OVERCOME BACK PRESSURE BEFORE THE PULLING CYLINDER CAN MOVE AND KEEPS THE CHAIN FROM HAVING SLACK.THERE IS ALSO A MECHANICAL SPRING LOADED LINKAGE WORKING OFF A CAM ON THE SWING POST THAT PREVENTS THE OPERATOR FROM SWINGING TOO FAST AT THE ENDS OF THE SWING CYCLE.I ASSUME YOUR ROD BROKE AT THE CHAIN END WHERE THE EARS HOOK TO THE CHAIN.LOOK FOR MISALIGNMENT OR A BENT,LOOSE OR BROKEN PIN.

I have the same backhoe on a ford 535, my chains have slack in them. I believe the cushioning valve is gone because when I bought it the two cylinders were plumbed into a tee which drained into an antifreeze bucket! I have since plumbed both cylinders straight to each other and have come to the realization that this is definitely not the correct fix. Where can I get a book on this backhoe or does someone know what parts I need to fix my backhoe? Lee

I think Chris is on to it. It has been a long time since I had a 4500 around but as I remember the swing chain is actually two pieces and connected to a boss on the swing tower. When replacing the chains swing the boom over against one stop. Retract the cylinder on that side just enough to make the connection. Then swing the boom back and make the other connection at the middle position. You should be able to run up against the stops on both sides and not bottom out on the cylinders.
The swing "cushion" is actually a mechanical linkage that pushes the control handle back when coming to full swing.

Now that is from almost 30 years ago so don't shoot me if I'm wrong.

I am not familar with the 4500 but the 3400/3500 had a flow limiting device on the swing (from what I remember, its been a while). When the swing cylinders reach the end of the travel, the swing lever would have a lot of resistance limiting full travel of the lever (making it really hard to operate) and slowing the swing speed.

I have a 4500 but it is a loader only. This seems to be a weak link on the 4500 backhoe. I have seen a few posts on the Ford forum. You should post an inquiry on the Ford Board and search the archives.

Bob, I'm not familiar with your backhoe but I have seen similer problems. They usually occure when cyls have been repared with new parts being made for them or a worn mounting repared on one side only so one cyl gets hit everytime you cycle it fully. There must be some way to adjust things to make both cyls come to the end of their stroke to gether. Also are the swing bearings tight or worn out, a lot of wear at that point could affect it I think.

I don't know much about fords, but could the chain be a tooth off ? center the boom and measure the cylinder rams.
I have an IH hoe with rack and pinion and it was off one tooth,it wouldn't go all the way to the left but would hit the right outrigger.
