Case450D quit on me

I recently bought an early 70's case 450d to do a little work around my place. I had operated it several times over the summer and the other day while pushing some dirt it just shut off on me. All pressure and temps. were in good operating range so I was puzzled. I noticed a minor fuel leak dripping from the area around the fuel filter and what I believe is the mechanical fuel pump. Upon trying to restart, she cranked over real good but did not act as though it was getting fuel. I had no smoke coming from the exhaust and was thinking I had an air lock in the injector pump. Is it possible to get an air lock in the fuel system while running? I've towed it up to the barn and will work on it soon. I obviously will have to fix the fuel leak but was curious about getting air lock in the fuel system. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks to all who reply.RG

Check to see if you first have fuel at the pump. If you have fuel, then you'll need to crank the engine over and set it at TDC, remove the injection pump, and take it to an Injection pump repair company and have the coupling changed in the pump. Those little couplings fail once in a while, just ask anyone with a Ford diesel pickup.

rookie,

Before you jerk that pump off the tractor and spend 350.00 plus or minus, I think you should be sure that is the problem. Remove the return line and fitting from pump , if engine will run the governor drive ring is the problem and pump need a kit . if it doesn't run look somewhere else. the kit that includes the ring ( coupling ) is about 30 bucks the rest is labor, it takes 2 to3 hours at most to do one . I think they are well paid for their service . If I do 2 or 3 at a time and have all the tools out , Ican get the time down to an hour .

Before you go tearin into that thing first shut the fuel off (petcock just above the sediment bowl - sediment bowl just below the tank) Take the glass bowl off of it. Put it back on after you wipe it clean. Open the petcock and see how fast it fills up. If it fills up right away, without any hesitation... then go to your filters-
see if you have knocked one of them good with a root or something. I replaced a secondary fuel filter once when I had a problem like yours. It had a split on the backside of it that was nearly imperceptable. Changed that and bleed off the system- then fired right up.

ONE MORE THING- does air bubble out of the bleed nipple on top of the secondary filter everytime you try to start it? If so it is one of 2 things:
fuel starved, or air is bleedin in lines or fittings. Let me know what you find out. I am interested to read how it went. Mike

Man oh man does this sound familiar. I got a 450 Case loader. 188 engine. Same problem. One thing to look for besides the leak. If you got anything at all in the tank it will find its way to the sediment bowl. If fuel fills up slowly in the sediment bowl PRESTO! thats it. I drained my tank and pulled the sediment bowl and the nipple the bowl is attached to was packed full of a goo like tar substance. I pulled the tank inspection cover off and cleaned the tank real good with a solvant. No trouble sense then. Check this out. Good luck to you. Mike

p.s. these 450's is good little machines around a farm. you got a loader or dozer?

Thanks to all who replied. I appreciate the info.I have already changed the fuel filter right after I bought it and after it shut off on me I made sure I was getting fuel to the pump. I also cleaned the sediment bowl and opened the petcock and fuel flowed freely. In fact the fuel continued to drip from the area between the filter and mechanical pump. At the time, I could not tell where the fuel is actually dripping from so I will have to do some more eye balling. When I had first bought this dozer, it had been sitting for some time and would not start until I had bled the air from the lines. So I am certain I have a problem in one of the lines or at the pump or filter suppying the injectors. I was just puzzled it could actually develop an air lock from such a small drip while it was running. I also want to install a block heater on this machine while I'm working on it. Does anyone know what that might cost and where I could order one and have it sent to my place? Thanks again for all the good advice.RG

Hello again, I've screwed up my 450 loader with a red ceder root about 2" in diameter one time. Lost fuel pressure, sucked in air, stalled out, etc. I pulled up the cover plate by the brake pedals and there was the root jamed up into both fuel lines.
It took a crowwbar, hammer and 1/2" chisel to get it chopped out. Replaced both lines and rubber line dampers. Presto - it fired right up and went back to work. Tight spot to work in down there, but you got to go down there anyway to grease the universal on the driveshaft, so check that out too. Stay in touch with us. Like to hear how it went. Do you have a service manual for it? There is a small screen filter on the low pressure side of the injector pump. It is under the male fuel line adaptor. I once took that out and it had a nearly invisible gel like substance on it. I cleaned it off good with thinner and that solved another fuel system snafu. Hang in there man, you'll get it. Them 450s are terrific little machines.

If that fuel leak is where the pump can draw down to a low pressure it will draw in air and give you a air lock.Fix the leak and bleed the fuel injection lined.
Later Bob
