Backhoe Swing problem

I have a Dynahoe HEY STOP THAT GIGGLING!!! yeah Dynahoe. I just do my own work in my spare time & though it's big, ungainly & SLOW I like it. I work in rock & clay & I hardly ever break anything. They are BUILT... Problem: This thing will dig a 19 foot hole. Hoe is quite large. When I get off level while working the loader end the hoe will swing to the down hill side a little at a time. Sooner or later I can feel it getting tippy & I look around & the hoe is off to one side. I'm not real good with hydraulics. Either the swing cylinders are leaking by or the valve needs rebuild. Short of capping off the swing cylinders/making an oily mess & running it around to see if the hoe still moves to one side, is there any way to diagnose the problem without pulling everything apart? I think I know the answer but thought maybe somebody out there might have an old trick up their sleeve.....

Valves do eventually wear out but normally the packing in the cylinders are the problem.
I like the chains

Short term I'm leaning in the direction of the chain idea. Problem is things like this bug me & I'll be driven to fix the problem eventually. I am surprised Dynahoe never had any mechanisms to secure the boom & swing in transport. Weight sure never was one of their considerations The thing tips the scales at 10 ton if she's been washed. Next size up from my 190-4 is the 200-4 & they weigh 16 ton. Even being use to the size of mine I walk up to one of them ( the 200 series ) and stand in awe for a minute... They, Dynahoe in general are big, slow, hard to see what the front bucket is doing but they push like a dozer & the lift ratings on the hoe & front bucket are incredable. If your not in any hurry they are quite a machine...

Yep--there is an old trick. In polite terms they are called transport or anti-swing chains.

I'm not sure if that ever had them on or not. They might have deleted them to keep the weight down ;) :D

Most likely you have bad packing in the swing cylinders. A valve would have to be pretty bad to pass that much oil.

The easiest "fix" would be to put chains on it and hook them up when you are not using the hoe.

Run the chain from the rear frame to the side of the boom, one on each side. The way they were normally installed was the the frame end was attached and the connection to the boom was into a "key hole" cut in the side of the boom or a lug welded to the side.

Oh---and one last thought----stay out of soft spots :D :D ;)
