How do you tell if you have diesel fuel in the crank case oil?

Take the oil from the dipstick and let it drip onto a paper towel. If the wetness around the drop of oil spreads faster than the drop of oil is spreating, you have fuel in the oil.

Tim you did not say the engine make,if you did not replace the seal on the pump drive shaft and you had no fuel leaking into the crankcase before I would take it you had an external leak,if you have repaired that you should have no worries about oil leaking inside, all fuel injection shops I know always wants the pump to reseal it themself's and charge an arm and leg for doing so

There are two ways. One you can send a sample away to be analized by a lab (10.00 per sample) .Another way is to monitor your oil level and if it seems to be incresing in volume all the time then it is likely fuel or something else. How you check depends a little bit on the circumstances around why you asked the question.

Do you have the name and address of a lab that does these tests?

Don't know where you are located but Southern States Cooperative and its affiliates have the kits in their catalog for 9.75. Get the kit, fill it, even has a postage paid sticker for the bottle. Lab they use is GREAT. Had a sample on a tractor test positivefor fuel and they called me. Talk about service. Lab is with Universal Cooperatives somewhere in Ohio.

Usually you can go to any truck or heavy equipment shop and they will know where you can send samples to locally.

I use Blackstone Labs
Link
they are in Ft. Wayne IN.
I have been using them for a couple of years and really like the service.
Give them a call or email them and they will send you sample bottles.
When you take the sample run the engine until warm and then take the sample directly out of the drain stream after it has run for a little bit to avoid getting any sediment from the bottom of the pan.
