I looked at this machine today, which has been sitting for the past 6 months. Before i buy it, i would like to know how much it would cost to make it a decent work machine. How much would the following items cost. The undercarriage was well worn and should all be replaced. The idler wheels and sprockets should be replaced, one idler wheel is broken. It started up right away, but soon quit, so the carb will need to be cleaned. The intake/exhaust manifold (looks like one piece) has a hole it it. It also would not steer, I think the steering clutches need to be freed or replaced. Any other advice for a novice would be greatly appreaciated, thanks>

Just look for another machine with a bad
engine, clutch, etc, buy that for cheap(~$1500) and scarf the undercarriage for this machine.
All the parts you dont need, you can sell to someone else or have around for later on when you need them.

Also, depending on the condition,
you can probably get a lot of hours yet out
of that u/c. As long as the track stays
on, you are good to go. You can also
take a link out of the chain, which should give you another 20% of life. ITs not
worthwhile to put a new u/c on these
old machines.

As for that machine, I would run it a bit
longer to make sure the engine is good
and the steering frees up. Seems like
in 6 months, the steering clutches shouldnt
lock up so its probably been sitting much longer.

If you dont have an engine, steering, and u/c, then you best not be paying much...

Dan,
You are looking at a lot of bucks to fix it up. Even if you buy it right, by the time you get all of the parts into it, you will have the same or more in to it than you could have bought a good crawler to start with. That is not to say there is anything wrong with a 430, but undercarraige is the most expensive thing to fix on any crawler.
If you decide to pursue it, we should have most or all of the parts you will need. Visit our website if you want to look at some of the different two cylinder crawlers.

This should become a parts machine. It has about $6,000 worth of problems in a machine that in perfect condition would be worth $5,000. There are some real nice machines out there. They just sold a real cream puff on EBAY in Ohio for around $4500. If I did not live in New Hampshire and already have 2 420C machines, I would have been interested. DO NOT buy this machine unless you have way too much money and need a rat hole to pur it into.

With all respect, this appears to be one of those machines that you walk away from. Unless you have a special interest in this particular machine, I'd recommend you keep looking. From what you describe, there is a lot of time and money needed to get this machine to operable condition.
